I Work For The Internet →
This is a great idea for an online petition. It definitely creates more of an impact than a simple list of names. It gives each name a face and a job at the same time.
However, I wonder if it would be possible to place a physical value on these jobs as well. For example, if every person had to input their salary in as well, and there was a grand total on the top of the page. The people on board with SOPA are using the belief that the bill will save a large chunk of jobs and revenue that the entertainment industry loses to piracy. This would be a great opportunity to remind those congressmen how much money the Internet sector brings in.
Or at the very least, I think it would help to add an actual grand total number of people who work for the Internet.
We work for the Internet. And we’re guessing many of you do too. Whether it’s researching, selling, coding, supporting, designing — so many of our careers depend on the Internet.
One argument that’s been made to Congress is that the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) is needed to protect American jobs. In truth, the new liabilities this bill would impose on startups could stop American innovation in its tracks.
To make this clear to Congress, we’ve built IWorkForTheInternet.org to show the world how many of our careers depend on the Internet.
If you work for the Internet, please add yourself and spread the word.
